Welch Allyn Lithium Ion Diagnostic Set

Welch Allyn's rechargeable lithium ion diagnostic sets have a number of components to them and when something stops working, it can be difficult to work out the problem unless you return it for assessment.

We have listed a process we use to help customer's remotely diagnose any issues themselves to save sending a unit back when they may just need a new globe or battery.

  1. If an otoscope of ophthalmoscope does not illuminate, try swapping the heads on the same handle to see if a different head works. If you see the light working on one head but not the other, then you may need a new globe for that head. Halogen globes will burn through the gasses after around 18hrs of use but can also be damaged if knocked or dropped while the filament is hot. LED globes rarely fail at all so if you have LED globes it is almost always a different issue.
  2. If it's an ophthalmoscope that isn't working, make sure the aperture wheel (not the focusing wheel) is positioned correctly - if it sits between two apertures, it will block the light from showing even if the globe is ok.
  3. If neither heads work, it may be a power issue. If using a black lithium-ion power handle with charging stand - does the stand show a green LED? If so, it is getting power from the wall. If not, check the connection to the stand, you may need a new power transformer.
  4. If the stand shows a green LED, it should then turn orange when a handle is inserted and then turn green again once fully charged. If it doesn't turn orange, try lifting it up and down when rotating the handle to see if there is any intermittent change to orange. If not, you may need a new charging stand or handle. If there is some intermittent change, there may be some corrosion on handle contacts or adjustment in the stand's contact spring that may be required. It would need to be sent in for assessment.
  5. If sending any parts in, please include all components so we can conduct a thorough assessment.
